There's just something truly magical about a handmade guitar. Crafted by Colin Fitch a dedicated craftsman or luthier, these aren't your typical factory instruments; they’re built slowly, one at a time, and with incredible care. It all starts with the wood, which the luthier treats like gold. They personally inspect, tap, and even smell fine pieces like rich mahogany or vibrant Sitka spruce to truly understand its unique qualities. Every single choice - from how thin to carve the internal bracing to the subtle curve of the neck - is custom-tailored based on the specific piece of wood and customers individual requirements. This deep, personal attention means that while two guitars might look similar, no two handmade instruments are ever exactly alike. They become more than just an instrument; they’re a unique piece of functional art, made just for making music.
Because the luthier works with such precision, their creations achieve breathtaking clarity and responsiveness - it’s the difference between hearing a song and truly feeling it. A handmade instrument can be custom - fitted to you, designed to feel like it was born in your hands, with your ideal neck shape and fret details. This creates a powerful, intimate connection where the guitar becomes a natural extension of your own musical spirit. While they certainly require a larger initial investment, these guitars are treasured by musicians and collectors alike because of their stunning quality and the knowledge that they hold a little bit of the luthier's heart built right in.
My name is Colin fitch, and I make guitars.
My son Greg asked me to make him a guitar, and with the help of his music teacher I made my first one, this was around thirty years ago.
I have made around two hundred guitars for my friend Martin Booth, around eighty bodies for Andrew Guyton for his Brian May replicas, and have lost count of how many I have made in my own name.
My workshop is situated near Stowmarket in Suffolk and is now entirely dedicated to guitar production having previously been a joinery shop.
Most guitars are built to order, although if I am quiet I usually crack on with building whatever takes my fancy.
All my guitars are electric, some being semi hollow and others solid bodied.
The woods I use Brazilian Mahogany, Rock Maple, Quilt and Flame Maple, Ebony, Snakewood and various other exotic woods.
Pickups and other hardware is sourced from the US and Japan.
A custom build including any paintwork usually takes around nine months, each guitar is priced according to specification.
